Handmade in SC. Ceramic pineapple platter.
Pineapples symbolize hospitality. The story goes during the early years of the Lowcountry, men would travel to the lower islands and South America to get tropical fruits and vegetables. Trading and exploration were a way of life in the coastal cities. Pineapples were one of the most expensive fruits know in the new world. They were highly prized and revered. They soon became a symbol of wealth. It is said that once the weary travelers come back home, the men wanted to reacquaint themselves with their family and friends. To assure this- it was said that a pineapple placed on the porch was a all clear sign that friends and other family were welcome to come over and visit-thus becoming the symbol of hospitality.
